Captain’s Report – New South Wales Golf Club 2021
Many of us shared concerns about the weather forecast in the days leading up to our first game of 2021 at the majestic NSW club, but in the words of our intrepid secretary, they always get it wrong, the rain stopped at 9am Tuesday and it turned into a pretty good day on the back of a solid south easterly.
An impressive roll up of 52 members and guests, the largest field for years, assembled for a 1.30 shotgun start.
As usual the course was in fabulous condition and although preferred lies on fairways was permitted, I did not speak to anyone who needed to take one. The greens were very consistent with the tight couch fairways demanding crisp ball striking.
One way or the other the wind is always a factor at this course and while not a gale, the breeze off the ocean was more than enough to make things interesting. On the positive side of things the slope rating of 139 gave everyone a few extra shots, but the blue barkers were placed well forward close to the white plates giving a bit of distance relief to all.
The scores were remarkably good with 15 players recording 36 points or better, over a third of the field, which was great to see.
The game was followed by an excellent dinner in the stately clubhouse and capped off a memorable day.
